Denison has developed and will adhere to strict cleaning and sanitation protocols that meet or exceed the directives of the State of Ohio and the CDC. We have invested significantly in increasing our supply of sanitation products and equipment.
Our facilities services team members are committed to maintaining the highest standards to protect the health of our community. At the same time, certain cleanliness and hygiene practices will be the responsibility of every Denisonian. We must all work together to protect our own individual health and that of the community.
Work assignments and schedules will be adjusted to prioritize cleaning and sanitation of the most high-traffic, high-use areas of campus. Given the ever-changing situation, we will continue to adapt as needed.

In an effort to maintain social distancing, unless it is an emergency, technicians will not perform work in an office or residence hall rooms when it is occupied and six feet of spacing can not be maintained. Face masks will be worn by technicians and requesters and each technician will disinfectant any surfaces that they touch prior to leaving. If needed, work will be scheduled at a time when the space can be vacated.
Cleaning and disinfecting of high-use, common spaces, restrooms, and high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs/handles/push bars, and handrails in public areas, and additional cleaning and disinfection in Residence Halls will be our priority. Services in single-occupancy spaces (such as individual offices) and low-traffic areas will need to be reduced to allow for the additional cleaning of higher traffic and use areas.
While every effort will be made to clean and disinfect surfaces on an increased schedule, the ability of the facilities staff to clean surfaces multiple times a day is limited and therefore everyone will need to practice good hygiene by washing or disinfecting hands often and after touching communal surfaces.
- Cleaning: surfaces are physically touched using detergents and/or disinfectants and a sponge or cloth - generally, this will be performed by Building Service staff and provides a highly sanitized environment after cleaning
- Sanitizing/Disinfecting: surfaces are sprayed with a disinfectant which is left on the surface to dry (can also be wiped on with towelettes) - is the most effective when left on the surface to dry and reduces germs to safe levels between cleaning.
CLEANING AND DISINFECTING SUPPLIES
Additional cleaning supplies will be provided for individual use across the campus. The program outlined below is based on our current understanding of available materials and assumes delivery occurs when expected. However protocol may need to be amended if our ability to procure product or material becomes limited based on supply and demand across the country Faculty, staff and students will be provided with a small bottle of hand sanitizer for their personal use while they are on campus. A process to provide refills or a replacement bottle is being developed.
Spray bottles of Virex disinfectant will be provided in classrooms and some common spaces across campus for anyone’s use. Everyone is encouraged to create a safe environment for others by disinfecting surfaces after each use.
Hand sanitizer stations will be provided in buildings across the campus. Everyone is encouraged to wash their hands/sanitize often throughout the day and especially after touching door handles, handrails and other high-touch surfaces.
ACADEMIC AND GENERAL CAMPUS BUILDINGS
Cleaning and disinfecting schedules will be adjusted for each building and posted on the Building Services web page. Work schedules and times will vary depending on staff availability and building use schedules.
- Classrooms, seminar rooms, hallways, handrails, doorknobs and panic bars will be cleaned by Building Service staff each morning, Monday through Friday.
- A spray bottle of disinfectant will be provided in each classroom and some common rooms such as study rooms in the Library. It is strongly encouraged that individuals using the rooms spray all surfaces, including desks, before leaving the room. Restrooms will be serviced and cleaned and entrance door handles will be disinfected mid morning. As supplies allow, disinfectant spray bottles will be provided to allow individuals to spray any surface they touch after use. Use of a paper towel to open the door when leaving a restroom is encouraged.
- There will be very limited service and only on an as needed basis provided after hours and on weekends in academic and other general campus buildings.
- No cleaning services will be provided for individual offices, workstations or departmental spaces. Disinfecting supplies will be provided to the department office to allow for individuals to clean their space.
- Department lounges and study areas will be serviced once a day by Building Services. It is strongly encouraged that individuals using the spaces spray all surfaces after using the space.
- There will be no trash and recycling removal from individual spaces, central collection locations will be provided throughput buildings.
Specific cleaning and disinfecting schedules will be adjusted for each building as necessary.
- Common area restrooms, lounges, high touch spaces will be cleaned and disinfected once daily (M-F).
- Common area restrooms, lounges, and high touch spaces will be monitored and disinfected once daily on Sat and Sun.
- Common kitchen areas will be cleaned once a day M-F, students should clean up and disinfect after each use.
- Students in buildings with communal res rooms and areas will be provided disinfectant spray bottles and it is expected that they will spray fixtures (toilets, sinks, doorknobs) and other surfaces that they come into contact with after use.
- Students in suites, apartments or rooms with private baths, will be provided with disinfectant spray bottles for each bathroom and will be expected to clean their spaces regularly and disinfectant fixtures and surfaces at least twice weekly. A process to refill bottles is being developed.
All staff are completing COVID-19-specific training designed by sanitation experts and updated regularly as new information emerges. Topics covered include proper disinfection, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), physical distancing protocols, and more and are integrated with food safety and sanitation protocols.
Enhanced cleaning and sanitation schedules and checklists spell out clearly detailed procedures that meet or exceed all local guidelines and national best practices.
- Frequent disinfection of high-touch surfaces such as door handles frequently, and wiping down tables and seats between guests
- Sneeze guards or plexiglass barriers installed at all counters/cashier stations, which will be cleaned frequently while in use.
- All handles and frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected every 20 minutes.
- Adequate disinfecting products on hand and available at all times (Virex II 256).
Crown Fitness Center
Hand sanitation and washing will be available upon entry to the facility. Anyone who uses Crown Fitness Center will be responsible for disinfecting all equipment before and after use. Gym wipes will be provided in multiple locations for users, as well as spray bottles for hard surfaces, such as ledges, countertops, and glass. There will be two students working each shift that we are open. One student will clean equipment during the entire shift. We will open for 2.5 hour blocks of time, and close after each block of time for 30 minute cleaning sessions. At that time, the equipment will be sprayed down with the Clorox 360 or with Oxivir. A thorough cleaning of the entire space will take place at closing each day. All shared equipment, such as exercise mats, medicine balls, and stability balls will be removed from the fitness center.
HVAC and COVID
According to the CDC: the risk of spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 through ventilation systems has not been studied but is likely low. Routine HVAC maintenance is recommended. Although it is never the first line of prevention, consider general ventilation adjustments in your workplace, such as increasing ventilation and increasing the amount of outdoor air used by the system. Maintain the indoor air temperature and humidity at comfortable levels for building occupants.
The HVAC systems in campus buildings vary in complexity and ability to modify them The majority of office and classroom buildings have systems that provide some outside air for ventilation. Where possible, Facilities will do the following:
- Change the filters in air handling units and fan coils to MERV-13 rated vs. current MERV-8, increasing their ability to trap smaller, and more, particles.
- Clean and disinfect coils and filter chambers in air handling units and furnaces
- All buildings with central systems currently provide outside air for ventilation. Where possible, outside air volumes will be increased – the ability to increase ventilation is also dependent on outdoor and indoor temperatures and humidity – indoor conditions will be maintained.

DO YOUR PART
Our individual commitments to mask-wearing, social distancing, frequent hand washing/sanitation will go a long way toward keeping spaces healthy, as will the intensive custodial cleaning that spaces will receive. As an enhanced measure of disinfection, however, we are expecting all members of the campus community to do their part. As outlined in the sections above, that means being accountable for disinfecting all common spaces after each use. Disinfectant will be provided in many locations across campus. While in residence halls, students are expected to also carry their personal bottle with them to disinfect restrooms and common areas after use.
REPORTING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, SPECIAL PROJECTS AND CLEANING NEEDS
In an effort to maintain the safety of staff and building occupants, unless there is a threat to individuals, equipment or the building, addressing routine maintenance requests may be delayed to allow the work to be performed in an unoccupied space. If needed, room occupants may be asked to vacate the space while work is performed or a time will be scheduled for when the space will be vacant.
Any non-emergency work requested in a designated Quarantine area will be delayed until the space can be properly disinfected. Anyone requesting work is asked to clearly indicate the work is needed in a Quarantine space and check the Quarantine field when using the online Work Request Form.

Trades staff will continue to maintain the campus from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Technicians are assigned to a group of buildings to maintain. In general, they will only work in their assigned buildings.
